Opening of the new swing span of the Faidherbe bridge in Senegal

30/03/2011

The Faidherbe Bridge project in St. Louis (Senegal) has reached a milestone: the T2 swing span has been implemented beginning March 2011. Due to vessel collisions, the swing span was not in use for many years. On March 6, 2011, after shifting, the new T2 span was opened for the first time.

Faidherbe Bridge, single point of communication between the historic city of St Louis and the rest of Senegal, is a steel structure erected in 1897. With a total length of 511 m, it has seven arches and a swing span. It is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The project involves the complete replacement of the metal superstructure, including the piles rehabilitation. Several spans have been replaced by shifting.

In the photo, the construction team is waiting for high tide to set the new span over the stack pivot. On the left of the photo is the old span while the new one to implement is on the right.
